A new independent video game that lets you take control of your Uncle’s abandoned farm includes a feature that sees your character develop a serious and irreversible back condition due to years of arduous labor, delighted gamers confirmed.
“We’re so happy players are enjoying their sneak preview of our new game, A Farmer’s Life For Me,” said Ian Strickland, director of the title that recently released a demo to favorable reviews. “We love all of the popular farm games, but we wanted to find something they’d all been missing. We considered the skyrocketing cost of equipment or the crippling effects of climate change and extreme weather patterns, but we ultimately went with good old fashioned excruciating back pain.”
Though unconventional, developers were up to the challenge of fitting back pain into their adorable farm simulator.
“It was definitely a challenge getting chronic back pain to fit into our game’s motif,” said lead animator Leah Navarro. “But we came up with some really adorable little animations, groaning and holding your back, stuff like that. My favorite one is where your guy gets down on the ground to tie his shoes and decides to stay down there for a while because no one’s around to help him up. I know it doesn’t sound cute, but just wait until you see it!”
In addition to the game’s colorful visual style and overly joyful townsfolk, the depiction of the protagonist’s debilitating back pain, which can realistically only ever get worse, has been described as ‘downright charming’ by many players checking out the demo during last week’s Steam Next Fest.
“The demo only scratches the surface,” said local gamer Kevin Boone, one of many anxiously awaiting the game’s full release. “But the official Farmer’s Life For Me website talks about how your worsening physical health gives the game an engaging and organic difficulty increase as the game goes on, due to every single action you perform in a day being affected by the shooting pains in your back. Many evenings are spent deciding whether you should feed yourself or take a shower. Both would take too long!”
“I hear there’s also a fun minigame later on where you try to get all of your farming duties done in a day while still finding time to call your insurance provider and see if they’ll cover an MRI,” he added. “I can’t wait for this fucking game, dude.”
As of press time, developers confirmed that A Farmer’s Life For Me would not feature the ability to marry someone from the nearby town like in many other popular farming games, as this particular farm is in the middle of nowhere and your character is way too busy for that kind of thing anyway.
