Recently, I was fortunate enough to be asked by Brian VanHooker to participate in Cracked’s list of The Top 50 Funniest Games of All Time. After clarifying that I was, in fact, the intended recipient of said invitation, I excitedly started preparing, putting together my personal top 10 list of games to discuss with the crack staff that Brain put together for the piece.
I thought it might be fun to share my personal top 10 list that I contributed for the article, and talk about a few games that I almost included but didn’t make it. Sorry in advance if today’s piece is less haha-funny and more oh-maybe-I-should-play-that-old-Futurama-game-funny.
Let’s go!
1. What the Golf?
My personal choice for the funniest game of all time. Of course, it was tricky to come up with a list like this -- ranking things as subjective as video games and comedic experiences -- but I kept coming back to my first playthrough a few years ago, and the amount of times I actually laughed out loud (something me and my friends call an “out loud laugh,” or “OLL” for short in our text messages). I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a comedic game more.
Without giving away too much of the fun, What the Golf? is built on blowing up whatever you were just doing and having you do something even more bizarre. Getting to the next hole and discovering the twist on golf this time is joy personified. Are you whacking the ball? Maybe it’s an office chair you’re trying to get to the hole this time? Maybe the power meter itself is going to go flying across the fairway once you hit the button?
I don’t know how to talk about funny stuff and not just be like, “Oh my god, it’s so funny, you guys.” But truly -- oh my god, this game is so funny, you guys. It’d be a crime to tell you more.
